The Best 13 Images of 2013

The Best 13 Images of 2013

When it comes to the images that define "The Internet", the best place to look is on Imgur. They have released what they have defined as the "top 13 images to rule them all", a collection of pictures that represent a huge impact on the current zeitgeist.

So what is Imgur if you are not already a card carrying Imgurian? Basically Imgur came about as a simple tool to upload and share links to images on Reddit, the unofficial "front page of the Internet".

Most Contagious 2013

Most Contagious 2013

Contagious Magazine have released their Most Contagious 2013 report. Originally designed as a print version for delegates at the Most Contagious Conference in London, it provides a review of the trends, technologies and creative innovations that have shaped brands and the marketing industry over the last 12 months.

The report runs through the changes in consumer culture through a number of key sections, providing examples and case studies within each leading into their Most Contagious award. I'll try and break down the information in this post as simply as possible (see the full report for detailed info on each example).

From Dave Senay, CEO and President, FleishmanHillard (Contagious sponsor and partner):

"Can brands and businesses rise to the challenge? We all feel the waves of disruption swirling through and around our organisations. We all sense the new immediacy and intimacy our stakeholders demand. Will we seize the opportunities that convergence and virtual proximity afford?

Hoopla

Hoopla

After recently dusting off my Advertising book collection (who keeps physical books these days anyway?), I had another read of Hoopla, a fantastically insightful manual on how to think differently when it comes to creating successful modern day advertising.

Hoopla is essentially the story of the rise of Crispin, Porter + Bogusky (CP+B), the tiny Miami agency that went on to become a global powerhouse. Besides the amazing insight into their body of work, it provides an overview of what they consider to be their secret sauce - the theoretical tools they have applied to drive success in a rapidly changing world.

This post is designed to take a deep dive on some of these concepts.

The YouTube Review: What Does 2013 Say?

The YouTube Review: What Does 2013 Say?

To start off this post, let's look at some statistics on how big YouTube has become. The following are some statistics released by the YouTube Press Department about their viewership:

  • More than 1 billion unique users visit YouTube each month
  • Over 6 billion hours of video are watched each month on YouTube—that's almost an hour for every person on Earth, and 50% more than last year
  • 100 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute

The Design Process Pyramid

The Design Process Pyramid

The Design Process Pyramid is a framework developed by Ryan Germick, the Google Doodle Team Lead. I stumbled upon this model via William Newton on Medium (I'm paraphrasing a lot on this one).

The Google Doodle is an example of great design that ships consistently. The pyramid is designed to explain the keys to its success. As always with pyramids, build up from the base.

The Way of Innovation: George St. Pierre and The Way of the Fight

What can an MMA World Champion teach us about innovation?

The Way of the Fight by George St. Pierre is a fantastic insight into the life of not just a world champion fighter, but a consummate businessman and gentleman who has transformed himself into a global brand.

Part philosophy, part scientific methodology, part business tutorial, and part self help guide, George weaves personal narrative with advice and commentary from some of the most influential teachers throughout his life and career.

The Zero Moment of Truth

The Zero Moment of Truth

This post continues my ongoing series on Mental Models.

The Zero Moment of Truth is a mental model developed by Google to try and explain the changing nature of traditional marketing methods on the purchase funnel. In this way, it attempts to highlight the way digital technologies have changed the mindset to how we need to approach marketing as a whole.

The Traditional Marketing Model

In the Traditional Marketing mental model, connecting with customers follow a simple pattern.
